TUTORING
Hi,
I'm Sharon. I'm the other half of SPC Freelance. Do you need a little extra help with your reading or writing skills? Maybe I can help. I
was a Project Literacy tutor / instructor for adults. Now, I striking out on my own and look forward to assisting you obtain that better
paying job.
Background
In 1989 I joined the Reno chapter of Project Literacy. To qualify as a tutor though, I had to take and successfully complete their training
program. .
I passed and was introduced to my first student. He was a maintenance worker. He was also functionally illiterate and could not write or
read his own name. This handicap kept him from progressing in his job.
We met several times a week for a three month period. During this short time, I was able to teach him how to read and write the
following information. He learned how to write his name, address, telephone number, where he worked and his daily work schedule.
This was a major accomplishment for someone who could not read or write when we started.
In 1998, I signed on as a volunteer with Junior Achievement. After completing their training, I was given my first assignment. I taught
3rd graders at a local school how their city government works. They learned, for example, why factories are not built next door to
homes. I don’t know who learned more though; the children or me. But, I had a feeling of a job well done and an armful of cards from
the students when the semester ended. I still read those cards to this day.
Formal Education
I've taken numerous college level courses as well, including Early Childhood Development. I then enrolled in a Nevada Certified Nursing
Assistant course. This entailed six months of study, internship at a hospital and passing a two part state exam. I passed both parts.
I also passed the Praxis Series Assessments tests for teachers and para-professionals in the teaching field. These tests measure
basic academic skills, subject-specific knowledge and teaching skills. The State of Nevada also requires any one hoping to become a
teacher or teacher's aid to pass the Praxis tests as part of the certification process for these positions.
